History, Affiliations & Rankings Located in Cambridge, USA, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a well-renowned private research university. MIT was established on April 10, 1861, when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts awarded it its legal charter. This occurred two days before the Civil War began.
