The "University of the City of New York" (as NYU was originally known) was envisioned from the start as something new: an academic institution metropolitan in persona, democratic in spirit, and responsive to the demands of a bustling commercial culture. It was founded in 1831 by a foresighted group of prominent New Yorkers. The first classes in contemporary disciplines like architecture, civil engineering, astronomy, chemistry, sculpture, painting, English and modern languages, as well as classical Greek and Latin, began in rented quarters near City Hall in October 1832. The institution was founded in Greenwich Village, New York, in 1831, and has since expanded to other parts of the country. NYU's founders decided to build a university that would be "in and of the city" in 1831. New York City has grown into the world's first fully cosmopolitan city in the years afterwards, and NYU has changed alongside it. A number of New York University schools and departments have developed academic partnerships and affiliations with NYU's global sites like National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, Association of American Universities, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program and International Association of Universities. Because of these affiliations, a large number of faculty members have been able to participate in debates about curriculum development, faculty recruiting, and other academic and co-curricular initiatives at each NYU worldwide campus. New York University has continuously been placed among the best universities in the world, with the most recent QS World University Rankings 2022 placing it at #47 and the most recent THE World University Rankings 2022 placing it at #27. NYU is also ranked #30 in the world by US News & World Report's Best Global Universities Rankings 2022.
Greenwich Village in Manhattan (primary campus) and Downtown Brooklyn (NYU Tandon School of Engineering) are NYU's two campuses in the cherished hometown. Students can choose from 23 residential halls, and all new freshmen are guaranteed accommodation for four years. The majority of NYU's buildings are located in a roughly square area defined on the south by Houston Street, on the east by Broadway, on the north by 14th Street, and on the west by Sixth Avenue. Washington Square Park is surrounded by the majority of NYU's main buildings and offers a five-million-square-foot interior space and over 1,700 faculty members to advise and assist students in their studies. The university currently operates at 12 academic centers in the United States that accept both domestic and international students. Aside from that, the university maintains international campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, China. Students from all over the globe come to NYU Abu Dhabi for a strong liberal arts education from a world-class research institution, and the Chinese campus is located in the heart of Shanghai, one of Asia's cultural and financial capitals. Every year, more than 50,000 students enrolled at NYU. Students can choose from over 2,700 courses in art, science, medicine, business, and management at NYU. Students can create a bespoke degree through the College of Arts and Science, where they can choose their electives and tailor their degree to their interests.
NYU provides grants and work-study opportunities to young researchers and academics to help them further their education. It has an illustrious alumni list that includes world-class leaders in their disciplines who are currently employed with the greatest organizations on the globe. Nobel Prizes, Abel Prizes, National Medals of Science, Technology, and the Arts, Pulitzer Prizes, Tony Awards, and Oscars were among the many honors bestowed upon the illustrious NYU faculty. The number of members of the National Academy of Sciences among NYU professors has grown from 18 to 37. More than 44,000 students and 4,500 faculty members at New York University are ideally positioned to influence the 21st century as creative, intellectual, and involved citizens. They study and teach at what has become one of the world's most prestigious universities. They draw from and add to New York City's inexhaustibly vast complexity. The organization helps bring all communities on NYU together through social gatherings and educational programs. Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga, Adam Sandler, Aziz Ansari, M. Night Shyamalan, Anne Hathaway and others are among New York University's notable alumni.
Every year, students from 183 different countries enroll at NYU. It has a specific Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, which is in charge of promoting and celebrating diversity-related events. Roughly around 17,000+ degrees are awarded across all undergraduate and graduate programs at New York University. 57.8% of these degrees are awarded to women, and 42.2% are awarded to men. The most common race/ethnicity group of degree recipients is white (5,624 degrees), 2.39 times more than then the next closest race/ethnicity group, Asian (2357 degrees). Having said that, student diversity has also increased at NYU in terms of underrepresented students of color, economic diversity, and geographic diversity. NYU not only attracts the best students, but it also attracts some of the best firms and organizations looking to hire exceptional young graduates with a passion for excellence and innovation.
