Established in 1883, the University of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest university with nearly 40,000 students. During the period of the Great Depression of the 1930s, there was an increased interest in academic research, which was when the University witnessed major academic expansion. Various students began a literary journal, Phoenix, which finally became the focus of the first literary movement in the history of New Zealand. In the late 1960s, the university established the largest library in New Zealand. The University of Auckland has affiliations with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Asia-Pacific Association for International Education, Association of Pacific Rim Universities, Universitas 21 and World Universities Network (WUN). The University ranks #85 in QS World University Rankings and #137 in World University Rankings 2022 by the Times Higher Education. Furthermore, the U.S. News Best Global Universities ranks the university at #118.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses The University of Auckland provides courses through its six campuses at different locations: City Campus, Newmarket Campus, Epsom Campus, Grafton Campus, Tai Tokerau Campus, and South Auckland Campus. The University’s main City campus is spread over an area of 16 hectares. All the campuses are well equipped with the necessary facilities providing students with a great learning experience. City Campus is situated in the centre of Auckland, it provides facilities such as cafes, health services, libraries, childcare facilities, and a recreation centre. Newmarket Campus is situated close to the primary business area of Newmarket, is home to the faculties of Engineering and Science, and may extend further in the future. Epsom Campus primarily comprises the Faculty of Education and Social Work providing Foundation, Undergraduate degrees and Graduate degrees for about 3500 students. Grafton Campus is home to the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, the Philson Library, and many clinics of the university. Tai Tokerau Campus houses more than 200 students and provides different types of foundation courses containing New Start and the Tertiary Foundation Certificate.
Accomplishments and Alumni The University of Auckland Business School has Triple Crown accreditation from AACSB International, EFMD-EQUIS, and AMBA. Only 1% of business schools globally have this Triple Crown endorsement, so it puts the University of Auckland among the top universities globally for Business and Management education. Further, the University of Auckland has a “Gold” star rating for Environmental Impact and Equal Opportunity in the QS SDG Ratings. The University’s faculty have collectively claimed 8 Prizes for Research Innovation in various disciplines and have been recognized by the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the Royal Society Te Aparangi. The University of Auckland has a pan-global alumni network, including successful graduates who take on leadership positions in global corporate heavyweights. Student Diversity and Visiting Companies The University of Auckland values diversity in all its dimensions. It has more than 33,000 student enrolments out of which about 25,700 are undergraduates and about 7,700 are postgraduates with about 2,200 faculty members on its premises. They have about 9,900 international students hailing from all over the world on the campus. The male to female ratio is 54:46 at the University of Auckland making it a fairly gender-balanced university. In fact, 360 international programs taught at the University of Auckland were nominated for the GoAbroad Innovation Awards 2020, for the category of Innovation in Diversity.
