About the University

The University of Calgary, formerly known as Alberta Normal School (later to become the Werklund School of Education) opened its doors in 1906, providing a steady stream of educators to a new province eager to grow and advance quickly. Their efforts were finally recognised on April 29, 1966, when it was granted autonomy. From there, growth was rapid and furious, as a new campus was built and innovative educators from around the world arrived in Calgary, Canada. All of the University of Calgary's undergraduate engineering programs are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. They are academically affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), International Association of Universities (IAU), and Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID) and the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE). The University of Calgary falls in the top 250 universities globally, claiming rank in bracket #201-250 in THE World University Rankings 2022, #235 in QS World University Rankings 2022 and #169 in the US News & World Report's Best Global Universities Rankings 2022. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses The University of Calgary welcomes the world from the foothills of Canada's snow-capped Rocky Mountains to the desert shores of the Persian Gulf. The university has 5 campuses linked by the desire to create and share knowledge. Built in the 1960s — and evolving ever since — the main campus is home to 11 of the 14 faculties, world-class research and athletics facilities, and extensive support services for students, faculty and staff. Located in Calgary's northwest quadrant, the campus occupies more than 200 hectares — an area larger than the city's downtown. The other campuses are Foothills, Downtown, Spy Hill and the international Doha, Qatar campus. Students work with leading researchers to transform their passion into expertise in one of over 160 degrees and 65 graduate programs.

Accomplishments and Alumni In January 2022, the University of Calgary became Canada’s newest top 5 Research University and the #1 Canadian Research University for the creation of startups according to Research InfoSource. Since the inception of the International Strategy in 2013, the University of Calgary International has received a number of awards for its achievements in internationalization. The University of Calgary is the recipient of the 2019 Catalyst Award and 2016 Board of Directors’ Award for Comprehensive Internationalization by the Canadian Bureau of International Education. Recognized by Association of Public & Land-Grant Universities as the 2017 Institutional Award winner for Global Learning, Research & Engagement. Some of the notable people belonging to the university are Al Duerr, Mayor of Calgary, James Gosling OC, inventor of the Java programming language and Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies, there are over 300 student clubs on the campus with interests ranging from Academics to Sustainability, and everything in between. There are a total of 31,863 students enrolled at the University of Calgary and there are about 6,000+ International students. The environment is truly diverse and the student community respects welcomes and celebrates people coming from all sorts of backgrounds. Career Services at the university hosts a variety of events for students to explore career options, meet with employers and build networks.
