Woolwich Polytechnic, the United Kingdom's second-oldest polytechnic was established in Woolwich in 1891, giving birth to the university. It was founded by Frank Didden and opened to students in October 1891, with Quintin Hogg's backing and beliefs. It began as a combination of education, social, and religious purposes, similar to Hogg's pioneering business on London's Regent Street. Thames Polytechnic was founded in 1970 when Woolwich Polytechnic and a portion of Hammersmith College of Art and Building amalgamated to become Thames Polytechnic. The Major administration gave Thames Polytechnic (together with many other polytechnics) university status in 1992, and the institution was renamed the University of Greenwich in 1993. The university moved from its original main location in Woolwich's Bath way Quarter to its present main campus in Greenwich in 2001. The university has established itself as one of the world's top academic institutions over the years. It has received accreditation from a number of notable organizations, including the CIPD, APS, and AMBA. The University of Greenwich London was placed 101-200th in THE Impact Rankings 2021, while it was ranked 601-800th in THE World University Rankings 2022. The QS World University Rankings placed the university between #751-800 globally. As per the Complete University Guide's University League Tables 2022 and the Guardian's best UK universities 2022 – rankings, the university ranks #=92 and #94 respectively.
The University of Greenwich has three campuses namely Greenwich campus, Avery hill campus and Medway campus. The Stock well Street Building, which houses TV and film studios, a library, and high-tech editing facilities, is located on the university's Greenwich campus. The £25 million Dreadnought Building also houses the campus's social and academic amenities. With four clinical skills laboratories, two weather-proof sports pitches, a sports hall, a large lecture theatre, and a gym, the Avery Hill campus boasts exceptional sports and instructional facilities. Many study facilities are available on the Medway campus, including an 8,000-m2 lab, the Drill Hall Library, residential facilities, and a student hub. Accounting, Finance, Architecture, Science, Business, Management, Engineering, Arts, English, Social Science, History, Law, Marketing, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Psychology are just a few of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes available at the university. The university's Faculty of Architecture, Computing, and Humanities, Faculty of Business School, Faculty of Education and Health, and Faculty of Engineering and Science all offer these courses.
