About the University

The University of Leicester was founded in 1921 and is amongst the top universities in the UK. The University has founded as Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland University College in 1921. A local businessman, Thomas Fielding Johnson, donated the University's land in order to build a living tribute for all local people who made sacrifices during WWI. The motto of the university is Ut vitam habeant, which means "so that they may have life." Students were accepted to the college for the first time in 1921. In 1927 the institution became University College, Leicester.  After 30 years, the institution received its Royal Charter, granting it the status of a university with the right to grant students its own degrees. The university has also partnered with government bodies, other institutions, and research organizations like ACU, AMBA, EMUA, EUA, Sutton 30, M5 Universities and Universities UK. The University of Leicester is placed at 27th position in the UK (and 185th in the world) in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022. The university is also placed at 31st position in the UK (and 242nd in the world) in the QS World University Rankings 2022. The Guardian League Tables 2022 and The Complete University Guide University League Tables 2022 have ranked UCL #30 and #38 in national rankings, respectively. 

Campus, Courses and Infrastructure Though the oldest structure dates from 1837, the university's very compact campus features a diverse spectrum of twentieth-century architecture. The main campus is located a mile south of the city centre, near Victoria Park, Wyggeston College, and Queen Elizabeth I College. Being located in the beautiful city of Leicester, the University of Leicester boasts state-of-the-art laboratories, libraries, art studios, computing centres, and other facilities supporting best-in-class learning systems. The university offers various courses through its undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The University of Leicester is a centre for advanced learning known for its world-class infrastructure and highly-experienced faculty members and focuses on research-based education. The university structure is divided into 3 colleges namely The College of Life Sciences, The College of Science and Engineering and The College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

Accomplishments and Alumni In 1963, the University won the inaugural series of University Challenge. The Times Higher Education REF Research Power rankings place Leicester in the top 25 universities in the world. Its study was considered to be internationally good in 75% of cases, having far-reaching implications for society, health culture, and the environment. Leicester also submitted a large number of academics to the REF (84%), demonstrating that our academics are continuing to create and expand on our world-leading research. In the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking, the University is placed 19th out of 766 universities worldwide, placing it in the top 3%. It is also the first in the world for goal 15, life on land, due to its academic excellence, quality education and commitment to conserving the biodiversity of the local land and buildings as part of its Biodiversity Action Plan.
