What is GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized international level test accepted for admission to various disciplines at many graduate schools worldwide. It is used to screen graduate school applicants in a multitude of disciplines in the arts and sciences. Students looking to pursue master’s or doctoral programmes can take the GRE test. It comes in two formats- General and Subject test.

Why take GRE?

Thousands of business and graduate schools accept GRE as a standardized test. The test analyzes verbal and quantitative reasoning, analytical writing ability and critical thinking. While GRE presumes fluency in English, it emphasizes on understanding words in context, rather than memorization by it’s verbal reasoning sections. GRE scores might just be a formality for some while it plays one of the most important factors in graduate school admissions for many. High GRE scores are of extreme importance when applicants have weaknesses in their other credentials. The importance placed upon GRE scores varies widely among schools and even among departments within schools.

How long does it take to prepare for GRE?

GRE preparation duration is subjective and cannot be measured in calendar days. Hitting a set target score can take anywhere between 50 and 200 hours, depending on how efficient the GRE preparation is and how many points the candidate needs for Quant and Verbal scores to go up. Example : An English major for whom the Quant section is unimportant and only needs about five more points on the Verbal section needs fewer hours than someone who got 140 on both sections of a practice test and seeks a 160. Regardless of how many hours it’ll take you to reach a set target score, the hours can be spread over a few weeks to several months.
